Watchmen are a good option when it comes to control your property, e.g. check visitors, are all doors and windows locked, are there holes in the fence, is there any technical issue like leakages of pipes, etc.. But here we talk about protecting your property, and that goes far beyond controlling your property.
Having this in mind, there are many good reasons why highly educated guard dogs with appropriate handlers are the solution of choice, especially in the night: A team of handler and K9 dog will control and protect your property.
- Perfect guardians in the darkness: In the darkness a dog will detect an intruder long time before a watchman has any chance to see an intruder. Watchmen cannot have their eyes everywhere, while dogs can detect even a fully camouflaged intruder in a distance of several 100m even in full darkness.
- No escape by hiding or camouflaging: Intruders are often experienced in camouflaging and hiding.
And how often does it happen that a watchman detects something suspicious, but then assumes that everything is o.k. as he can´t see the intruder-while he is still around. But there is no escape from dogs, the dog will directly bring down an intruder even in full darkness or even when he covers himself. - Always 100% alert: Dogs are always alert, while it is natural that watchmen cannot be 100% focused through a complete shift of 10 or 12 hours. For that reason, the German Army for example uses either dogs for protecting their properties (especially barracks or ammunition depots) or limit a shift for soldiers on watch to two times two hours while they are on watch, with 4 hours of rest in between. To ensure that they are always fully focused.
Protection against sabotage and vandalism: The high threat of vandalism or sabotage is that it can be executed within seconds, for example while the watchman is just in another area of the compound. But the dog will smell an intruder long before he can be seen – and from then there is no escape. We have never heard about an intruder who has made it to accomplish his plan after having been detected by a guard dog.
Dogs are a weapon: Be aware: Professionally educated dogs are a weapon, and even more effective than a gun, as they will bring down an intruder even when a human is not able to see him – 100% effective.
Educated to fight: Watchmen are usually educated to watch, but rarely educated to go into a fight with an intruder. And if the intruder is of stronger body condition, the intruders outnumber the watchmen or are even armed, then the watchman doesn´t have any chance but run for his life. While one guard dog alone can “manage” up to five unarmed intruders, and up to three intruders if they are armed with pangas or knives. And the guard dogs don´t count but attack and protect their handler without any fear.
Deterrence: One often underestimated reason is deterrence. But evidence has proven that this is one of the strongest reasons to use professional dogs: If an intruder is caught by watchmen he will be arrested by the police – and most likely released after some days or weeks. So, his risk is limited. If he is aware that there are guard dogs, he takes the risk to become seriously injured, disabled for the rest of his life – or even been killed. This is not the intention, but it is a serious deterrence.
